In view of the rising COVID-19 cases in the state, the sale of platform tickets has been stopped with immediate effect from today. The Central Railway has stopped the sale of platform tickets at various stations including Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
The decision has been taken to avoid over-crowding at railway stations at a time when there is a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases in the state. Notably, Mumbai is witnessing a spurt in coronavirus cases in the last few days.
The sale of platform tickets has stopped in the following stations – Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kalyan, Thane, Dadar, Panvel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus: CPRO, and Central Railway.
Earlier, Central Railways had increased the fare of platform tickets to Rs 50 from Rs 10 at select railway stations. The new rates that came into force on February 24, 2021, will remain effective till June 15 this year.
Meanwhile, Western Railways has also stopped issuing platform tickets with immediate effect. Entry at stations has been restricted only for passengers with confirmed tickets, GM Western Railway said.
“We are doing everything possible to combat the COVID-19 situation in a better way, increasing of beds and other amenities is being done on a war footing,” Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said.
Notably, Mumbai reported 8,938 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a drop from over 10,000 infections each on the previous two days, and 23 fresh deaths.
