COVID-19: Delhi, Mumbai report record high cases as India witnesses surge in infections


COVID-19 cases in the country continue to show an upward trend with various states reporting a record high number of cases in 2021.
The national capital on Sunday (April 4) reported 4,033 fresh cases of COVID-19, highest single day increase this year, said a state health bulletin. This new addition has has taken the state total tally to 676,414.
In the past 24 hours Delhi recorded 21 fatalities taking the total death toll to 11,081.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday (April 2) said that state is witnessing fourth wave of COVID-19. The state has seen a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks.
Within a span of just five days, COVID-19 cases in the national capital have multiplied four times. Last Tuesday (March 30), Delhi reported 992 fresh cases.
Meanwhile, the maximum city also continues to witness a surge in COVID-9 cases. Mumbai on Sunday (April 4) recorded 11,163 positive cases, highest since the pandemic started. The total active caseload of city stand at 68,052.
Maharashtra on Sunday (April 4) reported 57,074 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours and 222 deaths. 
In a bid to curb the rising number of COVID-19 cases, the state government has imposed a weekend lockdown and night curfew in the state from 8pm on Friday to 7am from Monday.
India on Sunday (April 4) recorded 93,249 new cases of COVID-19, the highest single-day rise this year, taking the total tally to 1,24,85,509.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (April 5) chaired a high-level meeting to review the COVID-19 Pandemic situation and vaccination program in the country. 
PM Modi said that the five-fold strategy of Testing, Tracing, Treatment, Covid-appropriate behaviour and Vaccination if implemented with utmost seriousness and commitment would be effective in curbing the spread of the Pandemic.
